Coast Path: Porthallow to Helford

Good morning – Happy Wednesday!

This week I am in Cornwall, picking up the next section of my coast path walk. I drove down yesterday morning, leaving as soon as I’d had breakfast and just after 12:15 I arrived in Helford.

I had pre-booked a taxi (Telstar Taxis) to pick me up at Helford and take me to Porthallow, where I reached after walking 18 miles of coast over 2 days last July.

Just after 13:10 I started my walk, heading North back towards Helford.

Today was a very sunny day with a fair amount of wind, which was nice. Cornwall got absolutely battered by Storm Pierrick (as named by MeteoFrance – the French Met Office) on Monday overnight, causing beach huts to be washed in to the Sea at Falmouth, the sea wall at Porthleven to be damaged by huge and powerful waves, and a yachtsman was rescued by the coastguard 40 miles off the Lizard. The clean up was all over the local news on the radio during the drive down.

Thankfully for me it was just a sunny day – and really quite muddy at times, but no matter – I still enjoyed a good walk. A selection of photos are below.

My highlights of the day; The fields heading down towards Nare Point had stunning views over the Helford River mouth and over towards Mawnan on the other side of the river.

Gillan Creek/Flushing Cove was an interesting little part. I hadn’t noticed there was a Low Water Route I could have taken which would have cut out almost 2 miles, but actually taking the ‘alternative’ (High Water Route) was a bit more interesting. Some lovely little cottages along the water’s edge at that point.

There were quite a lot of little beahes / coves along the way (what do you expect for a coast walk!?) but Bosahan was particularly good. Perhaps it was because it was sheltered, the sun was shining, the water looked amazing, at that particular time. I took a few minutes to sit down and enjoy the sunshine before pushing on to the finish line.

In the evening I found my accommodation for the week – a self catering apartment a few miles south of Falmouth. I’ve got everything I need for the week. A nice added touch: The water for the apartment and the main house half a mile down the track is not mains water comes from the quarry. It goes through a triple filtration system and a UV filter and doesn’t have any of the added flouride and chlorine which mains water does. It does taste very good.

I had a home made pizza for dinner (just tomato sauce, ham and cheese on top) which was good, served with some baked beans.

Hopefully today I should be able to complete the coast path walk as far as Falmouth. The weather won’t be so great today, I may not start the walk until the afternoon if it rains all morning!

Distance Walked: 13.19km (8.2 miles)
Total Coast Path Walk (since January 2022): 122.14km (75.9 miles)
