Burgos to Burguillos del Cerro

It has been a long drive today, right across the middle of Spain.

It was overcast in Burgos this morning and cooler than it has been recently – a welcome relief after days of hot sunshine actually. I started the day with a nice walk in the forest / nature reserve, near the campsite.

I wasn’t in self-catering accommodation today so I had breakfast in the campsite cafe before I packed up and set off.

It was mostly driving, not much sight-seeing today – but I did stop for lunch in Béjar. As I drove close to the town on the motorway the clouds hiding the tops of the surrounding mountains made it look quite mysterious.

My accommodation tonight is a large bungalow (I’d forgotten I’d booked it, I was expecting a hotel room when I arrived!) – in the Spanish province of Badajoz. I am getting close to the border now. I’ve seen numerous signs on the motorway saying “Portugal” – tomorrow I will be following them.

My first destination in Portugal will be Ferragudo, in the Algarve, where I will stop for 2 nights.

One observation: All the way through France I kept saying the German word for Yes/No (Ja & Nein)…..now I’ve arrived in Spain, I managed to finally find my French and say “Oui” when asked a question today. I’ll get the hang of it one day.

The lady who showed me to my bungalow when I arrived didn’t speak English – and I don’t speak Spanish – but I did learn the Spanish word for “car” today (coche)…..that’s because she asked for my passport so I went to get it from the car. And the Spanish for “one night” (when checking in to accomodation) is “una noche”. The photo below is the view I have from where I am sitting as I write this:

But I won’t get too busy learning Spanish. The language is going to change again tomorrow as I cross another international border.

As I cross the border the notification will come up on the dashboard saying “Portugal” along with a diagram of speed limits (for built up areas, main roads and motorways – similar to the road signs you see at borders). Yes the car knows exactly where it is! The clock will update itself automatically too, as Portugal is 1 hour behind Spain and France. (It is the same time in Portugal as in the UK).

After a long day I need a lie down (and I’m going to read another chapter of my book – I’m currently reading Among the Lemon Trees by Nadia Marks.

Buenas noches,

FH.
