It was Mum’s birthday at the weekend, and so we went to the cinema to see a new film: ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel‘.
A comedy drama, the film follows a group of people from the UK who relocate to the hotel for their retirement… and the hotel appears not to be as good as the adverts said.
The film stars Judi Dench, Celia Imrie, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Penelope Wilton.
I thought Maggie Smith’s character, Muriel, was quite entertaining. She reminded both Mum and I of someone we know… 😛 Her comments, which included ‘I want an English doctor…that one can wash as much as he likes but his colour ain’t coming out’ sound exactly like the sort of thing this person might say.
And when she said: ‘If I can’t pronounce it, I don’t want to eat it‘, I tried to work out what my diet would consist of if I was to use that principle. I decided that I’d have to live on Curry, Σουτζοκάκια, Σαγανάκι, Γηγάντες, Γύρος, Κεφτεδάκια, Σουβλάκι, Schnitzel, Haggis and Marmite… and that I would not be allowed to eat Beef Bourguignon, Asparagus or Broccoli as well as anything else that has a Spanish, Turkish, Albanian, French or US English name.
The ending was quite good too, it turns out that some of those who retired to India and got a massive shock when they realised how India works, adapted quite well to their surroundings and started to enjoy it.
I wasn’t too sure what to expect but really enjoyed the film in the end, and recommend it to anyone who likes to watch funny things.
