Day Trip to Jersey

Yesterday I had a lovely day but a very long one, as I did a day trip to Jersey. This meant leaving the hotel at 5:30am in order to check in for the ferry and get through Customs before the 07:15 departure.

The crossing from Guernsey to Jersey took 2 hours and the ferry was absolutely packed, so I paid a little extra for access to one of the lounges. The Club Lounge at the front of the boat had tables & sofas, and breakfast too. It was so comfortable and I had a lovely view of the sunrise from the boat.

After arrival and clearing Jersey Customs, I stopped in St. Helier to enjoy the morning sunshine. Then a very busy day followed.

I started with Jersey Zoo – my highlights were the monkeys and the orangutans, the bats, the butterflies, the tortoises (the very big ones) and the Guernsey Golden Goats.

I had hoped to visit the War Tunnels but they are closed for the season, Instead I went to Gorey and visited Mont Orgueil Castle. That was my highlight of the day, with the sun shining, Gorey is a lovely little coastal village. The views to and from the castle are brilliant. I had a lovely lunch in a cafe too.

After pottering up and down the coast a bit (just so I could say I’ve been to Gibraltar), I drove to the CorbiΓ¨re Lighthouse. Accessed by a causeway only walkable at low tide, the lighthouse was my first sight of the Channel Islands from the ferry the other night.

With the Sun setting in the background I could see the ferry coming in, I made my way back to St. Helier for a hot drink and toilet stop, before heading back to the harbour to check in, get back through Customs, and get on the ferry back to Guernsey.

It was a late arrival as the boat was running on just one engine for a little while, but otherwise – a very good day!
