Back to England: Berwick-upon-Tweed

Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland

Leaving Edinburgh, it was time to drive back down South to England. A little over an hour after setting off from Edinburgh I crossed the border in to Northumberland, and decided to stop at the most Northern town in England.

Boasting “all the simple ingredients for the perfect break away: Fresh air, sea and countryside, friendly folk, and rich history, Berwick-upon-Tweed is actually closer to Edinburgh than it is to Newcastle. It is also slightly further North than Copenhagen, and the Southern tip of Sweden! Sitting on the English-Scottish border it has passed between England and Scotland a number of times – most recently transferring back to England in 1482. Listening to people on the street, they sounded more Scottish than Geordie to me.

This being just a quick stop, I parked near the town centre and walked around, through the centre of town and up on to the town walls where I got a good view out towards the sea, and across the mouth of the River Tweed.

Then, back in the car.

My destination for the night was my cousin Sophie’s house in the North Yorkshire Moors.

Good night,
I’m back in England now so I can stop writing in Gaelic!

FH.
