Burford, Oxfordshire
Yesterday, for Dad’s Christmas present, we went to The Farmer’s Dog – the pub opened by Jeremy Clarkson in 2024, and which was the focus of last year’s series of Clarkson’s Farm.
The pub is located just a half-hour drive from home, just off the A40 near Burford – along a route I have driven many times.
To eat at the pub, it is best to book in advance – tables get booked up very quickly! To eat yesterday (30th January) I made the booking on 1st December – and even that was a challenge!
If you’ve not seen Clarkson’s Farm, the ethos is that it exclusively uses produce made in Britain, completely banning any foreign ingredients. So: No Ketchup. No coffee. Meat is sourced from local farmers. The drinks are made with British grown fruit. It’s Hawkstone beer & cider; Bensons for the fruit juices I was drinking, and the ice cream I had was from Cirencester’s own Dolcetti Ice Cream (which impressed me). That’s 3 local – Gloucestershire – suppliers – good for the ‘food miles’ if you’re in to all that!
I had Cotswold Pork & Herb sausages with gravy & mashed potato. The sausages were delicious! Mum had the special – beef stew – which also looked really good, and Dad had the steak pie. We were pleased with the service; Since the opening (which was shown at the end of the last series of Clarkson’s Farm), they have introduced a booking system. It seems a very smooth, slick operation – lots of staff, lots going on, but we never felt rushed. Our booking was from 13:00 to 14:30 but we were finished eating within an hour.
Beyond the pub, there’s the terrace for people who just want a drink and haven’t got a reservation. The Grand Tour tent is also located within the grounds of the pub – containing the butcher shop (Hops & Chops), the farm shop (Diddly Squat Farm Shop) and the bar / takeaway counter for people wanting food who haven’t been able to get a table in the pub itself.
I bought myself a pack of the sausages – the same ones I’d had for my main course – we can have those during the week for dinner one night.
I’d definitely recommend a visit to The Farmer’s Dog.
FH.
