This weekend I’ve been out on the road and yesterday I drove to Hampshire to visit Highclere Castle.
The castle is well known to TV viewers as it is used for a lot of the filming of Downton Abbey.
Open to the public only for about 60 or so days each year, Highclere Castle still serves as the family home for the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon.
My ticket allowed me to spend time in the gardens, go inside the castle during the afternoon, and view the Egyptian Exhibition; the 5th Earl of Carnarvon – one of England’s earliest motor car drivers (I like the sound of him) spent a lot of time out in Egypt, and discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.
It was good to be able to walk around inside the castle and find out about its history. It was designed by the architect Charles Barry, also behind the Houses of Parliament.
