A-Z of My Favourite Holiday Destinations: Zierikzee

I’ve reached the end of my A-Z which I started all the way back in April, when the lockdown rules were so much stricter than they are now.

The next challenge for me is lots of road trips in my new car (more on that in a new blog post in the coming days); I’ve set myself the task of visiting every county in England to visit at least one tourist attraction, or just go for a walk; No real time frame – this could take a few years.

But before I start that…. Zierikzee is the final destination in my A-Z.

Located 50km South of Rotterdam, Zierikzee is the main town on the Dutch island of Schouwen-Duiveland; the first place I ever visited in the Netherlands.

This was just before the first time I drove to Germany in 2017. In March I went for a long weekend in the Netherlands, had a great self-catering apartment a few km outside Zierikzee.

The island is part of the Dutch province of Zeeland which is in the South West corner of the Netherlands, bordering Belgium.

Despite its proximity to Calais (about 3-4 hours depending on traffic) I very rarely see another GB numberplate in this part of NL – it’s weird (I like being the only Brit on the roads there!) The area is however very popular with the Germans – understandable, as for many Germans in the West of Germany this would be their nearest bit of coastline.

Zierikzee makes a great base for exploring the wider region and I love going there for the odd long weekend – as well as a one-off overnight stop on my way to Germany.
