For our last day today we went back to Dessimi/Δεσίμι, the beach we enjoyed on Dad’s birthday last week.

It was cooler today; clouds had taken over and we even had a couple of short, light rain showers. Just as I was drying off after a swim and thinking it was time for another, it rained a little and cooled me down.

We stayed in Dessimi for a while and had lunch from the little caravan bar behind the beach. Then we returned to the beach to digest and sleep off our lunch. As the afternoon went on the clouds started looking more ominous and as we drove out of the car park we were aware that the wind was picking up.

By the time we reached the main road we realised that by staying at Dessimi beach, the worst of the weather had missed us. Elsewhere in Lefkada the wind had picked up quite considerably, blowing sand from various beaches across the main roads. The clouds looked greyer than ever.

We stopped off at the café by the Nydri Waterfalls on the way back for a drink – I had a milkshake while the others enjoyed a smoothie made with fresh fruit and Greek yoghurt.

Back at the apartment we had a last swim in the swimming pool. The wind had died down a bit and, though it was still cloudy, the grey clouds had been replaced by friendlier white clouds and the Sun was peaking through.

The daily special from the bar at the apartments was Giouvetsi – the beef cooked together with pasta in a tomato sauce and cheese which I like. We had one to share, as a sort of meze – not wanting to spoil our main meal.

For our final night in Greece, we headed out for dinner at the Taverna Makis, the fish taverna by the port of Lygia. We had a starter of Greek beans (the ‘gigandes’), courgettes and tzatziki. Just as we were coming to the end of our starter, it started tipping it down with rain. One of those short, sharp Summer showers.

As we ran for cover and moved to a table indoors, the waiters grabbed their umbrellas to rescue anything the customers couldn’t carry. We ate the rest of the meal not by the waterfront, but indoors. It was still a great meal though. The weather we’ve had on Lefkada today has been part of a series of Summer storms which are due to batter Greece this week. Sounds like we’re heading home just in time then!

Returning home tomorrow – flight at 12:35 from Preveza, so should be home in time for tea.

Good night,

FH.
