Four very good beaches on Syros can be found towards the island’s South coast.
The village of Vari (Βάρη) is about 8km South of Ermoupoli. The village itself is inland, but drive towards the coast and there is a sheltered, south-facing beach. There’s plenty of space on the beach, and being sheltered the sea calm. Its also sandy for a long way out.
It was unfortunate that it was windy on the day we went – while the bay sheltered and the water calm, we did get covered in sand! Apart from that it would have been a nice beach.
After a while we got back in the car and drove back towards Galissas – stopping on the way at Komito Beach; Komito is located to the South of Posidonia, facing out towards the small, uninhabited islands of Schinonisi and Stroggylo. Komito was another nice beach – out of town so not too crowded…there are umbrellas (you have to pay for them I think) but not sunbeds.
We stayed at Komito for a swim, had lunch and another swim before going to the beach a Poseidonia.
Poseidonia’s beach is small without sunbeds… it does have umbrellas which you don’t have to pay for. It is very quiet, with just a hotel behind it – there can’t have been more than two or three others on it at the same time as us.
The beach at Poseidonia isn’t sandy – it is rocky underfoot until you get a little way out – it is still nice to swim in though.
Between Posidonia and Komito is the beach of Agkathopes – this is considered by some to be one of the best beaches on the island, and it can therefore be quite busy at times. Mum and I walked there from Posidonia once – it is sheltered and sandy, but it was busy when we were there. I’d imagine it would be quieter outside of the peak season.
All these beaches are nice – Vari and Poseidonia both on the bus route; Komito and Agkathopes by car or by foot.
