I returned to Athens mid-afternoon and immediately changed in to shorts and t-shirt: It was quite warm as I walked from the railway station to my hotel.
After checking in to the hotel I left my luggage in my room and made my way in to the city centre. I walked from the station at Syntagma to Monastiraki Square, where in a bakery I bought myself some lunch.
Then I headed to a museum: Just a short distance away from Omonia Square lies the Hellenic Motor Museum. Spread over three floors at the top of a shopping centre, the museum is home to cars from all over the world including a section dedicaded to Greek-made cars.
Time was getting on by the time I left the museum, so I returned to the hotel to get ready for the evening: a ticket to a screening at the In-Edit film festival. I went to the hotel’s rooftop bar for a drink before making my way out.
The film festival venue was the Onassis Cultural Centre (known to the locals as ΣΤΕΓΗ) on Syngrou Avenue – quite a distance from Syngrou-Fix metro station but not too far from Kasomouli tram station.
I went to see a screening of the 2014 film about Edwyn Collins, The Possibilities are Endless. Edwyn himself appeared on stage at the beginning of the evening to introduce the film, which is about the recovery from the stroke he had a few years ago. After the film, he was back on stage to sing live for about 30 minutes, which I really enjoyed.
After the film I made my way back to Syntagma on the tram and I walked to my favourite Athenian restaurant: the Giouvetsakia in the Plaka district. Being so late at night the streets of Plaka were empty and many tourist shops shut but the restaurant was still open and I was treated to quick service (Greece operates at a slower pace than Britain does, one of the things I love about the country).
After enjoying my gouvetsi I made my way back to the hotel for a final drink on the rooftop bar, before retiring to bed.
Final morning tomorrow: The plan is to check out early and head in to the city for a last morning walk.
Good night,
FH.
