Until a month before my 21st birthday, I had been to Belgium only once before – passing through the country on the motorway while en-route to Boppard-am-Rhein, Germany, on a school trip in the Summer of 2006.
In November 2013, I was lucky enough to be able to visit the country on a trip organised/hosted by the Conservative MEP Ashley Fox. Staying at the Thon Hotel in Brussels City Center, we visited the European Parliament building for presentations by Conservative MEPs, before having some free time to explore Brussels in the rain. We had a tour of the Ypres Battlefield, enjoyed an excellent meal at the Scheltema restaurant, and spent lots of money on Belgian chocolate at P&J’s Chocolate Factory.
As with all foreign trips I’ve been on in recent years, I’ve set up this blog to share some photos along with some of my thoughts of the trip – use the links below to view all my photos, tweets and blog posts to find out about what I got up to in Belgium.
- Day 1: Travelling to Belgium
- Day 2: The European Parliament, Exploring Brussels, Dinner at the Scheltema
- Day 3: Tour of the Ypres Battlefield, Dinner at the El Greco, Greek Restaurant in the Grand Place
- Day 4: Returning to the UK
As you will learn by looking at my blog posts, I really enjoyed my first proper visit to Belgium, I got a lot out of the trip (much more than I was expecting too) – and having been back for just under a week, I am already looking at using all the interesting information I gained in Brussels in my final year university project: I am looking at creating a series of radio features/packages/podcasts exploring how the European Union works (or, as some may say, doesn’t work). I think my main challenge with that will be being politically impartial: required by all broadcast journalists under the OfCom Broadcasting Code.
I shall shut up now and let you explore the site, lookining at my photos, tweets and blog posts. If you have any comments please do e-mail me on editor@blog.fred-hart.co.uk.
Thanks for visiting!
