The Museum, the Mill and Michael (the Cat)…

Edinburgh & Selkirk, Scottish Borders

For breakfast this morning, I went to a lovely Scottish-Greek Bakery not far from the AirB&B I was staying in. As my extra night in Edinburgh was added last minute, I wasn’t able to get the same AirB&B for tonight, so I loaded my stuff in to the car and then headed in to the City Centre.

I then went to visit the National Museum of Scotland. Spread across 3 floors, you could easily spend a whole day here. I just had a quick wander around in an hour and a half. I particularly enjoyed the displays on Space, and the animals display, as well as the communications & technology bit.

Getting in the car, I headed South to an area of Scotland known as the Scottish Borders (or, simply, the Borders). It isn’t an area of Scotland I am overly familiar with, becaue as I normally travel to scotland on the M6, crossing in to Dumfries & Galloway, in the South West of Scotland.

My destination was Selkirk, where I would be visiting the Lochcarron Tartan Mill for a guided tour. It was a very interesting tour – I learn all about how Tartan is woven, how it is designed, the difference between Ancient, Modern and Weathered colours (our own family tartans have 2 versions – Ancient and Modern).

After the tour I got in the hear and returned to Edinburgh – a different AirB&B this time – but the joy of that is I get to experience different neighbourhoods within the same city. My AirB&B today is less central than last night – in a residential area called Granton, 10 minutes drive away from Edinburgh’s fishing community: Newhaven.

Tonight’s AirB&B comes complete with a cat. Meet Michael – who jumped up on to my bed within 10 minutes of me arriving. I think he likes me! He looks just like Ziggy!

I drove in to Newhaven for dinner tonight, and enjoyed a walk around, looking over the Firth of Forth towards Fife, and towards the Forth Road Bridges.

This has been a very short but enjoyable stay in Edinburgh – and longer than any time I’ve been to Edinburgh before, because I’ve only ever used it as a ‘rest stop’ when driving from A to B, stopping for an hour or two in Edinburgh. Tomorrow, after a tour of the Scottish Parliament in the morning, I return to England.

Oidhche mhath,

FH.
